I am close to the Mississippi River where there is plenty of flooding. They live in a flood zone. I lost 41 feet of my foundation. The insurance denied me in one minute. I appealed it. They said I didn’t have flood insurance (I am not in a flood zone nor did they rezone after the torrential rains) which was from memory $800/month in 2013. I appealed the decision because I was one of the few people who didn’t flood, but they said they don’t cover land movement (earthquakes). The hydroelectric pressure from the rain swelled the dirt and the entire back of my house pushed in by two feet and I could see daylight through the clay blocks. In my case, I got a check from FEMA (he said it was the worst damage in the area) for $6,200. rnrnWhat I don’t understand about all of what’s going on there is, people lose their property all the time by the Mississippi. Some finally just leave and some rebuild on stilts and very few people can afford flood insurance. So just because you rezone something a flood zone means nothing. You can still insure your house for the bank, it’s just with the understanding that there is a rider on the insurance policy not covering flooding. So, I can see why a bank would consider this a risky loan but there are other questions about the dams and reservoirs too there. In some counties, people are allowing tiny homes, others they aren’t by local government. What business is it of FEMA to rezone and declare properties condemned and bulldoze them? There are so many questions regarding this. And one cold night could take everyone out who are still living in tents. Will it happen tonight? I just heard a story where someone was just found 60 days afterwards because many of these bridges and roads were wiped out in the mountains. They aren’t expected to have electric for up to a year because this avalanche of water just wiped all the power lines and roads out. rnrnYea, I thought all I had to do was call up my insurance company and file a claim.
