Again, that was 25 years ago! One gigabyte hard drives had just come out at nearly $2k. My first Mac Powerbook back then ran with 2mb of ram and a 40mb hard drive. The Mac IIFX I worked on was the fastest computer we had, running a whopping 8mb of ram and a Motorola 68030 at 40 Mhz...until the Avid Media Creator showed up in the early 90s. At $180,000 , the Avid ran with a Mac Quadra 950 on a 68040 processor and 12 mb of ram. This system allowed for non linear editing. But, was not powerful enough to display broadcast quality video in real time. For that, layoffs had to be completed overnight. When you returned, you had your fingers crossed, praying that the system did not crash while you slept. Most editing was still done on 3/4 inch Umatic machines. Edit decision lists were stored on a 5.25 inch floppy disc used in a PC running DOS on an intel 286. These discs were then used to control high quality analog reel to reel or digital cassette video machines to assemble a final master. Digital video was primarily done on D1 or D2 cassettes tapes. a 30 minute D1 blank was about $600 and was stored in a mini suitcase. A full edit session might use 3 D1 machines at $150,000 each. The final tab for editing a music video could be as high as $60k. Then, Apple introduced RISC processors in the PowerPC line...which ultimately decimated the post production industry because then, nearly everyone could afford the equipment and learn how to use it. Hollywood has had the ability to fool everyone since the beginning. The rise of Hollywood has been in step with Government since the 1930s...actors and actresses are Americas aristocracy.
