You could be right on the red herring. It is a bit suspicious. However, I don’t think there is really anything there are on the carbon double bonds. It’s just a representation, and there are actually no "double bonds" here. The point was that the electrons are fully delocalized across the entire lattice. This is sometimes shown in 2D with alternating carbon-carbon double bonds. You can show this on a 2D drawing with two "double bonds" per ring on the internal rings of a graphene structure, but then try to reconcile the hexagonal rings at the boundaries of your structure on paper. You’ll always hit a ring where you can’t intersperse the double-bond representation between every other carbon-carbon bond. That’s simply an artifact of the pi system electrons not fitting a perfect alternating double-bond representation on paper. Another way to show this could be a dashed line circle inside all rings, indicating fully-delocalized electrons.
