Police have identified the attacker as Casey Sloan. They say that she jumped out of her seat. This was last Thursday. I believe it was around 1130, 1145 in the morning on the ASU West campus, charged torn a woman there who had just walked into the classroom. By the way, this campus is in Glendale at 49th Avenue and Thunderbird. And the officers say other students, of course, shot to see what's going on. They were able to disarm her and restrain her until the police could arrive. But that victim, she was stabbed multiple times and has already had to undergo surgery on a punctured spleen. Now, it happened in the Sands classroom building. It looked like it was unprovoked, according to the state press, when the victim walked into the classroom right at the beginning hour of class. She then, the alleged attacker, jumped from her desk and almost immediately began for stabbing attack. Among the witnesses, they report where the professor and about a dozen students. So the professor was already in the classroom and about a dozen students. And their reporting is that Mara Daffron, who was studying sports business, was stabbed a number of times on the left side of her body, in this from the state press. By the way, record show that the suspect had allegedly planned the attack the night before. Investigators say that Sloan was considering attacking a couple of different people. But she thought that the victim she chose was an easier target. She's now been charged with four felony counts, including premeditated attempted murder. Such a random attack and John and Ellen, it's just such a sad story. Luckily, Mara is going to be okay. But court documents, they tell this story of a 19 year old student who was planning an attack and chose the victim per classmate Mara because she seemed like quote an easier target. Now, as you mentioned, luckily, there were several fellow classmates who stepped in likely saving Mara's life. And we spoke to one of those classmates tonight as he played out the entire scary situation for us. I've never seen anything like this and I hope I never do again. As you west sophomore Matthew McCormick says he was settling into class last Thursday when he heard his classmate Mara scream and realized she was being stabbed. And in that moment, I didn't really have a thought going through my head. I just knew I felt compelled to do something. Police say fellow student Casey Sloan stabbed Mara twice before McCormick was able to intervene as she was going for a third attack. I was able to grab her wrist and apprehend her at that point for further damage could be done. Mara was taken to Banner Thunderbird Hospital and underwent surgery for stab wounds to her tricep as well as her ribcage area where the knife cut into her spleen. She's back home now, but has a long recovery ahead. McCormick says he was not the only person in class to step in and help Mara. He was a great job by everybody that was in that room by the EMTs, the paramedics and the police. Everybody responded really, really well. 911 calls were pretty instantaneous. Everybody seemed pretty locked in and knew what to do. And McCormick says he hopes to meet Mara's family soon, but for now hopes for a full recovery for his classmate. We miss you. To you and your family, I pray for your return and I am just so, so thankful that your family is able to remain whole through this tragedy.
