The COVID-19 pandemic is bringing great fear and grief at this time of change and challenge because of the coronavirus. This crisis will have a huge impact on how we carry out the mission of the Society of Jesus and in the Church. The Society of Jesus has done so many things since about more than 400 years and in each situation, Jesuit have been able to create the way of being in that situation. It's not an accident in the COVID-19. It's the fruit of our way of how human beings has understood and have made their own relationship and is a confirmation of our mission to collaborate to contribute in the change of this world. I think we can show the people through reflecting about the COVID-19, the fragility of the world we have created and how we need really to get together so we can go in another way. I don't think so that after the crisis things are going to change like this. There are so many interests behind this and so many we are so used to the ways we are dreaming to come back to our normality. We are dreaming to just live before the virus came to our life. But that's the great temptation. This particular experience of COVID-19 also reminds us how humanity has exploited our precious planet. In the fourth preference we express the desire and hear the call to work with others to care for our common home. The crisis is showing us that we are one humanity. Every human being, every people, each culture is part of this one, varied, rich and independent humanity. I feel motivated and energized to do something and I know that you do too. If we all work together we can bring about change on how we carry out the mission of the Society of Jesus. It is not too late. We are truly entering in a new epoch in our world and also a new era for the Society of Jesus. If we understand and live the universal apostolic preferences as a spiritual experience, we arrive at the preferences not after an exercise of a strategic planning but by way of an authentic discernment in common, carried out by the whole body of the Society of Jesus. This is the mission which Pope Francis gave us when he confirmed universal apostolic preferences. These were the fruit of a spirit-led discernment by the universal apostolic body. Illuminated by them we put into practice the mission of reconciliation and justice to which the 36th year of a congregation invites us. It is showing us that overcoming a crisis like this one is possible when we become aware of the importance of looking after the common good and taking seriously our individual responsibility. We are one humanity that there is no difference in age, race, religion or social status when we are one humanity. This crisis is a spiritual and intellectual challenge for us. We are in this together, we Jesuits, our late colleagues, our panes in the Ignatian family. We are in this together. In solidarity with the whole of humanity, we want to live this time as an opportunity. We want to take seriously the invitation that the universal apostolic preference and the crisis caused by the COVID-19 give us in different and complementary ways. It is an invitation to dialogue and to converse at all levels of our life. We are one humanity. We are not we cannot we don't have a Christian humanity and non-Christian humanity, a Buddhist humanity or is the people humanity is only one humanity. All of us all of us don't forget this crisis. Just okay, that was a bad night, a nightmare. We are awake again and we are again in our life as before. We have to take the lesson that if we don't change after this the next one will reverse.
