President Donald Trump calls for war against the Mexican drug cartels blamed for gunning down nine Americans. The victims were all women and children, some babies less than a year old. White House correspondent Mark Irons reports. Good evening Mark. Good evening, why President Trump says a wonderful American family got caught between two vicious drug cartels. Now I talk to a top administration official today who said the president is very upset by this attack and is making the US response a top priority. President Donald Trump is offering Mexico help to combat the cartels. He tweets the United States stands ready willing and able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great new President of Mexico has made this a big issue but the cartels have become so large and powerful that you sometimes need an army to defeat an army. He continues this is the time for Mexico with the help of the United States to wage war on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth. We merely await a call from your great new president. Our wife and our children left our town around 930 in the morning in three different vehicles and just just outside of town they were ambushed by heavy gunfire to the extent that one of the vehicles exploded. We lost nine and we have four maybe five I know four in the hospital I believe it's five. People were massacred. Christina jumped out of her vehicle waving her arms at the cartel to stop her vehicle waving her arms. Jumped out of her vehicle waving her arms at the cartel to stop shooting and so we believe that's when they did stop shooting when they probably realized it was women and children. There was no crossfire that they were caught up in. They may have been mistaken. I their identity but nevertheless they were here innocence women and children and three vehicles full of them going to weddings and going to see their husbands and their fathers and their families that they hadn't seen in a while. Three women and nine children all members of the LeBaron family were killed and so children all members of the LeBaron family were killed and some of them this is burned I believe while five minors remained missing last night. According to the version of two relatives of the victims to whom L. Universal talked the events began around nine thirty a.m. so during daylight around nine thirty a.m. on Monday when three women in their fourteen children left Bavispe, Sonora bound for the Mormon community of Lamora which is located four hours from the municipality of Galiana in Chihuahua. So the idea is that they were traveling from Sonora back home to Chihuahua. During the journey the vehicle which was the vehicle which was being driven by Ronita Miller LeBaron accompanied by four of her children a pair of twins of six months and two children of eight and ten years that vehicle according to these relatives suffered a breakdown in a tire relatives suffered a breakdown in a tire a breakdown in a tire so the second vehicle was returned to Bavispe in order to bring another unit however as those two cars approached the place where they had left Ronita and their children they observed large clouds of smoke upon reaching the point they located the car in the completely burned bodies and then those two cars were victims of a new gun attack so the two women in ten minors ran to various points to be safe so according to this according to this version being told to L. Universal by family members there were two cars with a bunch of family members and one of the cars had a tire problem so the other car went to get help and then when the two cars returned they found one car people and it burned and then they got shot at and then it's in according to this account in those second two cars there were two women in ten children and they ran off to try to escape. Babies trapped in a burning car among the dead 30-year-old Ronita Miller and her four children including eight month old twins 13-year-old Devon Langford survived the attack then walked 14 miles the attack then walked 14 walked 14 miles to get help. It was awful seeing the babies little skulls just sitting there on the floor of the car burnt skulls just sitting there on the floor of the car burnt and broke. This is for the record. Need and four of my grandchildren are burnt and shot up. Right on the road out of Lamora. That vehicle according to these relatives suffered a breakdown in a tire so the second vehicle was returned to Babies Bay in order to bring another unit. This is for the record. Need and four of my grandchildren. They're burnt. Need shot up. Need and four of my grandchildren. They're burnt. Need shot up. Need shot up. Suffered a breakdown in a tire. This was for the record. Need and four of my grandchildren are burnt. Need shot up. That baby's trapped in a burning ca- for the record. Need and four of my grandchildren are burnt. You shot up. Right on the road out of Lamora. Exactly. But the Douglas Police Department provided security for them and gave us updates today. Three mothers were reportedly driving in three separate cars with their children when the attack happened. Nine were killed. The dead included eight-month-old twins. Mexican authorities describe a grisly scene with ex- were reportedly driving in three separate cars with their children. We're reportedly driving in three separate cars with their children. We're reportedly driving in three separate cars with their children. The criminal group responsible for the attacks as L. Universal interrupted all communications in the region and maintained a security fence nearby to avoid intervention of police so that members of the Liberone family were I think this means we're unable to approach the site and confirm what happened until that night around seven p.m. Three women and nine children, all members of the Liberone family were all members of the Liberone family were killed. I realized that his story was anything but normal. This is a graveyard where my grandfather and great grandfather buried. The original story is they came down for the cause of floor marriage to continue it. You know Mexico allowed it. So they wanted to continue polygamy. Yes, my great grandfather, being a fundamentalist, he broke away from the Mormon church because he had two wives. That's when he went to establish colonial abarron. They established five or six colonies down here. The colony would be like a family with a few families. Right. And then your grandfather had ten wives. Yes, had children by eight of those ten but yes. How many grandkids did he have? Between grandkids and great grandkids they're probably pushing the 400 mark right now. All named the mayor, all named the mayor. Now having more than four hundred grandchildren might seem extreme to some but it's nothing compared to the shit that Brent's uncle Irval got up to. He was a straight up fucking lunatic. Now Irval not only had thirteen wives and over fifty children but he also used his own family including his own kids as assassins. Dubbed the Mormon and Irval and his family were suspects in over forty murders. Joel the barren was killed by his own brother Irval because of blood atonement. Yes. Well Irval tried to take over the church and he started claiming blood atonement the right to kill in the name of God. If you oppose him he has the right to kill you. Right. Once Irval snapped he just went on a killing spree. He had his daughters killed, his wives killed, his sons killed and they just went from there. He went haywire. So Irval goes on this killing spree across Mexico and the United States and at one point the secret services after him because he threatens to kill President Carter. They finally captured Irval in 1979 and sent him to prison and all the killing stops right. Wrong. And then after he dies and jail people keep on killing for him. He killed up to twenty five people after he died because he left a sort of hit list and they kept killing. They kept killing. Yes they did. Now as Brent is telling me all this I had to keep in mind that this blood atonement killing spree isn't taking place in the 1880s or anything. This is all happening in the 1980s. My grandfather ran from him for probably ten years. I mean he chased my grandpa, Cleared a Nicaragua. Your great uncle was trying to kill your grandpa. Rillin and LeBaron died in a car accident right out of Mexico City. A lot of people have been skeptical that actually Irval had something to do with it and his last recorded words were brother it looks like we've been ran off the road. That's some crazy shit. That says it's the modern day can enable here. Do you think that that's one of the reasons why because you had this sort of familial civil war you got tighter as a family so when the narcos came after your family you were sort of tougher. Oh definitely everyone was a watchman. Now what he's saying here is that because of Irval everyone in the LeBaron clan watched out for everyone else so when the car tells Kidnapped one of their own they were ready. Eric LeBaron was only 16 when he was abducted and held for one million dollars ransom. You didn't pay the ransom. We didn't pay the ransom. Right. Even if you could get the money and paid it they're just going to keep doing it. Just going to keep coming and keep doing it. We'll just use the money to buy more guns and get more powerful. Exactly. If we don't sever the head off this monster right now it's just going to get worse. We had to go to the government and say hey you won't allow us to bear arms. Right. But you're supposed to protect us. The protest forced the government to put pressure on the kidnappers and as it's quite rarer in these situations Eric was returned unharmed after paying no ransom. However it also served to enrage the local drug lord named Alrakeen who only lived eight miles down the road from colonial LeBaron. Now this is a narco who loves drugs so much that he actually massacred 18 people trying to get off the stuff at a drug rehab center. And now he's after the LeBaron's. We got a call from the White House last night and they told me about what they learned at that point that facts continue to get clarified but obviously it's a great tragedy when any citizens, Mexican or American in this case American citizens are brutally murdered and it's moms and children. This is really unthinkable and you know I agree with the president when he says Mexico has to ready and meckle down and go after some of these cartels and stop this escalating level of violence and hope that if there's a way we can help in that effort that we're called upon to do so. We have a good relationship with Mexico and yet what's happening along the border with regards to these cartels and the increasing level of violence is a real concern to us and I think the Mexican government and how to deal with it. This has been something that Mexico has been working on for a long, long time and there's still a problem and it's getting worse. And so the president says look let's get serious about it and it's indicated that he'd be willing to help and I think that's the right sentiment. I don't know that any people were targeted but it's a very dangerous area because there are drug cartels that are working along the border and there are a number of American families that live in that area and that's a great risk to many, many people and particularly the idea that women and children are going to be brutally murdered. It's really unthinkable. My dad had been born in Mexico and his family had to leave during the Mexican Revolution. He had big dreams. We were Mormons and growing up in Michigan that might have seemed unusual or out of place but I really don't remember it that way. My friends cared more about what sports teams we followed than what church we went to. So we're on our way down here to Colonio Juarez which is in northern Mexico and Chihuahua State. A lot of people may know that Romney and his family are actually from here. His father was actually born here in a Mormon colony but maybe what they don't know is that these Mormon colonies are still here and they're actually fighting the narco cartels, the drug cartels that run this whole region. They're standing up and they're fighting the kidnapping and the violence and the crime. So the question is what are the Mormons doing down in Mexico in the first place? Mormons originally came down to Mexico in the late 1800s after the American government forced the Mormon church to ban polygamy. The problem with this is that Joseph Smith, the prophet of the religion, held that polygamy was actually a divine commandment. He believed that you can only reach the highest level of the celestial kingdom or heaven if you were actually a partner in a plural marriage. So basically the more wives you had the better heaven would be and rather than give up their place in heaven many moved down to Mexico to continue to practice polygamy and thereby assure their place in the afterlife. Here in the seclusion of the Mexican desert they could practice all the standard Mormon rituals like baptizing the dead or wearing magic underwear but also the more controversial plural marriage or as we were soon to find out the outright insane practice of blood atonement. So after about five hours of some very nervous driving and a couple of very thorough stops at military checkpoints not to mention two stops that drive through liquor stores to calm our very jangling nerves. We finally arrived at the Mormon promised land. We left Juarez which is very dirty and poor and very druggy and then all the sudden you come over this hill and there's orchards and golf courses the streets are laid out nice they've got nice schools kids are playing baseball and there's angels and it's kind of like oh you know we've come to God's country because it's beautiful here and they obviously have money. So this is why they're being targeted by the narcos and this is why they have to fight back. So now we're going to have narco cartels you have a drug or you have a legal immigration. So all these problems who do you think should be the next president of the United States? Mitt Romney has a great great policy. Now are you just saying that because you're Mormonish? Those ties his people his family lives right across the mountain here you should probably meet him. Now when Brent says his family he means presidential candidate Mitt Romney's family. Now we knew that his father George Romney had been born into a Mormon colony in Mexico but not that they still had an active Romney colony here in Chihuahua. So the Romney's still live here yeah across the valley. Yep there's some great guys you know just really like them golf with them quite often and some really cool guys yeah. So we went across the valley to check them out. Nine holes with two par five and two par two par three's and the rest are four's. Pretty nice greens huh? Beautiful. How did this golf course start? We just got a group together I like to play golf and you know copied other golf courses put in the sprinkling system. When the violence started we lost quite a few members just like and Custard Grimes there's a lot of people moved out. You play here with some of the librarians from Colonial Labyrinth? Yeah some of the guys come over here and play. And who's better the Labyrinths of the Romney? The Labyrinths. I don't know what they're eating over there but so how long have the Romney's been here? In 1885. My great-grandfather Miles Park Romney was on the original people that came here. And it is a relative he's a second cousin. So his dad was born in Chihuahua. He was going in Cologne to Blond about 15 miles from here. Their family left and they stayed in the United States they didn't come back. You know I remember his father ran for President of the United States in 68 at least he was a candidate. His citizenship was questioned. Because he was born here in Mexico but he was born of American parents. And by dad by the way was born in Mexico of American parents living there and he came back to the United States what he was about five or six years old. Three women and nine children all members of the La Barone family of the La Barone family were killed. Carlos Coalfinado con los guazos adentro de mi prima ronita y sus cuatro niños chiquitos. более, as an the government has confirmed that they had already lost the government. It is not the first time this family has suffered attacks. We already said it at the beginning, the May of 2009 was kidnapped Eric Lebaron of 17 years. The member of the family gave the name to the people and for his liberation he exited the amount of a million dollars. But before he did, the whole community announced his decision not to pay and it was released two months later. In repressal and due to the activism of the community against the insecurity they were kidnapped and murdered. Ben Camille Lebaron and Luis Widman, in fact, because the case that he brought Juliana Lebaron and his family to set up as one of the activist groups, more influential against the insecurity in the country. And just in August, the Lebaron family had been destroyed with the little minority community that traveled from Sonora Chihuahua without anyone doing anything to prevent it. On the subject of the United States in Mexico, the North American nationality has the Lebaron family. The reality is that the Lebaron family is very concerned. Obviously all the Chihuahuan family, the Lebaron family, are residents of Galeana, Lebaron, Lebaron. The Lebaron family is a very good family. The activist, really Francisco? The activist, really Francisco. The Lebaron family is a very good family. The activist, really Francisco? The activist. And Juliana Lebaron, I don't know what the list is, it's been many years since the beginning of the nationality, precisely this, in criminal groups that have been able to spread the land of Sonora Chihuahua and that they have been able to spread it all, and Juliana Lebaron has been destroyed by different acts of protest by the abusers that have been committed against the Lebaron family. But well, now the cultural zarona of Sonora has been committed against the Lebaron family. And that they came toТы. And that they brought them to the怎麼樣 of fasting. And we will discriminate people from this and from the West, to church. With this stands forayan Family. And the 있었 of the property. And they took them to pieces of 10 of these families, and because that authenticBLaded human body was founded in Chihuahua, just as Fair Work had the Region拍 Juan station. that the audio produces in Mexico and that produces in all the world. Marxago, with Javier Sicilia, Atorrión, Monterey, Actual, Chapas, I have spoken with hundreds, maybe thousands of victims and I see that we all know before this evil. When we were left out and we wanted to continue our lives as if things were normal and they were fine. I didn't want to live with that audio and I have searched for another path. I have eleven children and... Julio Alivarón, a victim's parent, warned that the area could have been compounded with some criminal group and asked for help to the federal government to deal with the disappeared. It was announced at a time that there were threats to people who came from there and we informed them about the authorities. The authorities of the federal government? Yes, of course. We need the Secretary of the Public Security, Durazo, who is from the Sonora Sierra, to send someone to those families. They are children and this is nothing to do with anything that is involved. The government of Mexico can't deal with this problem, obviously, they need to give us the authority to solve our own problems. Because they are already in the hands of the... I never imagined coming to the state where I was born in these conditions. I could say that I was born one of my worst speculations. I am one of the victims of the lethal violence. My brother... No, but there is a video that made the blacksmith's daughter the car was killed by the wild dogs inside my first sister and her four children. Julio, what are we doing? We are already very busy, we are looking for security, security, security, security, security. Three women and nine children, all members of the La Barone family were killed. Two more Americans dead as a result of the violence in Mexico. Those victims gunned down this week by drug cartel killers. Now, in addition to being U.S. citizens, they were also members of a large polygamist sect with roots on this side of the border. Gary Tecman has been following this story. He joins us now live from El Paso Tech. Gary, kind of an odd inch wine here of two stories that three-sixies have been following very closely. Well, that's right, Eric, over the last several months and several years for that matter. We've done a lot of stories about polygamy and a lot of stories about Mexican drug cartel violence. But we never imagined the two topics would mesh like this in a very tragic way. Where in El Paso, Texas, just to our south, is the Mexican state of Chihuahua. In Chihuahua, there's a small town that was founded about 80 years ago by American Mormons from Utah, who went down there because they were angry the Mormon church decided to make polygamy against the religion. So, they settled there. 80 years later not all of the people are polygamous. That they are all very vocal against drug cartel violence. Well, apparently, they made members of the drug cartel very mad. This week, about drug cartel violence decided to make polygamy against the religion. So, they settled there. 80 years later not all of the people are polygamous. But they are all very vocal against drug cartel violence. But, that they are all very vocal against drug cartel violence. of violence. Well, apparently they made members of the drug cartel very mad. This week, about 15 gunmen went inside one of the homes, dragged two men out of the homes for both American citizens who have ten children between them and killed them in a very violent way. How did hundreds and hundreds of American polygamists end up living in Mexico for the last eight decades? After the mainstream Mormon church abandoned the practice of polygamy in the 1890s, not all Mormons were happy about it. Some groups that wanted to continue the practice of plural marriage broke off from the church. Some settled here on the Arizona Utah border. Others who did not want interference from U.S. law enforcement moved north to British Columbia, Canada. And in 1924, the Labyrinth family moved south to Mexico. 130 miles from El Paso, Texas, in the town of Galiana in the state of Chihuahua. It's where community members started the church of the first born of a fullness of times. They've lived here for a good part of a century. About a thousand of them working as farmers, and though illegal in Mexico like the U.S., some still practice polygamy. Today, members of the Labyrinth family are very well known in the local community for their opposition to the drug cartels and their kidnappings. We want to be an inspiration and the conscience of all the afflicted people from kidnapping. This man, 32-year-old Benjamin Labyrinth, would not back down to the cartels. After a 16-year-old brother, Eric, was kidnapped this past May. He refused to pay a $1 million ransom. But Eric was eventually released. Benjamin Labyrinth held rallies and marched on the state capital when another church member was kidnapped. Earlier this week, the man you see in the video, Benjamin Labyrinth, was killed. He dragged from his home and shot ganglamps style. The Labyrinth have been part of this Mexican community for decades. And with the recent drug violence crippling the country, they suffer along with them. Gary, it seems pretty obvious that the killing was some sort of a message that the community had been fighting back. So, what's the reaction been in the community? Are they essentially backing down? Well, you're right. It was a message. There was a note found near the bodies that said, we are very angry that 25-hour people were arrested following these killings arrested for drug violations. They said, don't ever do it again. And there was a note. It was a warning clearly. But the members of this town, colonial Labyrinth, said they will not back down. They admit they're scared. They say they don't have arms. Mexican weapons laws are very strict. So they don't have guns to protect themselves. That worries them. They said they will continue to fight. They will continue to make an issue about this. At the very least, they want more protection from the state government in Chihuahua and the National Government out of Mexico City. My dad, his severely damaged lives on my brothers and sisters for his own self-delusional egotistical and religious motives. And if not stopped, it's likely to continue. His name is Elan Labyrinth. His family, one of the most powerful and prominent in the often shadowy world of American polygamy. Decades ago, his ancestors founded a polygamous safe haven in Mexico. The today bears the family's name. And one of his uncles, a notorious convicted killer named Erval Labyrinth, who died locked up serving a life sentence in a Utah State prison. This is a religious call to essentially grow up in. And now, Elan Labyrinth stepping forward publicly, expressing fears about his immediate family and the path down which Elan says their religious beliefs have taken them. We basically know that my dad is impregnating and having children with my sister. His father is impregnating his daughter, your sister. His own flesh and blood, yes. Indeed, Elan Labyrinth, now alleging that his father, a 65-year-old retired businessman named Ross Labyrinth, is a believer in a fundamentalist theory sometimes referred to as the pure seed doctrine. That is, that the family's bloodline is special in the eyes of God, and that the practice of imbreding is often employed to help maintain its purity. It's not just the incest and all the damage, the genetic damage, the psychological damage. It's why he's doing it. And part of the reason why he's doing this, it's a way to psychologically trap his kids and prevent them from ever leaving. Who wants to believe this about their own family? Elan Labyrinth, not the only family member making the allegations against his dad. There was never once a denial of it happening. Brother David, making similar claims, as is a brother by the name of Allerick, who is an Air Force physician currently based in Afghanistan. Specifically, the brothers allege their father in pursuit of the pure seed theology. May have fathered as many as four children with one of his own daughters. A young woman now in her late 20s, they also allege that a 41-year-old brother named Wayne Labyrinth may hold similar beliefs as their dad, their biggest concern now, their youngest sister, a 16-year-old who still lives on the family's large farm in southern Utah. If we don't do something to stop this, she has a high probability that her life in the next coming years will be permanently damaged. She will be impregnated. She will probably be another brother, I'm guessing, maybe my dad. And to support their claims, Elan and his brothers say they have had DNA tests performed on two of the children that they suspect are the products of incest. Test that the brothers say have confirmed their suspicions that there is incest in their family. Allegations that have now also been brought to the attention of prosecutors in both Mojave County Arizona and Iron County Utah, where 3TV has confirmed that the Iron County Attorney's Office is now conducting a criminal investigation. Yes, we are investigating Mr. Labyrinth. Iron County Attorney Scott Garrett sang this to a Salt Lake reporter just yesterday. Because it's under investigation, I really don't want to make any more comment other than that, just that there is an active investigation. They say that you have impregnated your own daughter. Not true. Absolutely not true. We do. We of course wanted to talk to the man at the center of all this, Ross Labyrinth, whom we recently found on an isolated mountain road in southern Utah. Ross Labyrinth told us he would talk only if we put our cameras down and took notes. We did so, at which time Ross Labyrinth acknowledged that he might be the father of his daughter's children, but he then laid responsibility on his now dead wife Diana, whom he said unbeknownst to him may have collected his semen and distributed it to his daughters for the purpose of artificial insemination. And my dad is clearly trying to argue that these children are a result of artificial insemination. First of all, I don't believe that's true. And second of all, even if it were, it doesn't change the fact that half of the children statistically are going to have birth defects. And with that in mind, we decided to give Ross Labyrinth one more shot to defend himself on camera, which led to this. Have you impregnated your daughters? Absolutely not. But you say it's because we won't down the other poles of the falling. Hey, don't bring my camera. And while Ross Labyrinth unwilling to answer our questions in front of the camera. Is your father a good man? I don't know if anybody better. His son Wayne Labyrinth, who did talk to us at length, saying that the relationships inside his family are none of our business, while also saying there is great virtue in the practice of imbreding when it comes to both livestock and to selected people. Is imbreding being practiced here as your family? That's, you know, where we choose to engage in that as a private matter. But I personally believe that the combination of outmarrying for genetic diversity and your marrying to fixed beneficial traits can be beneficial for the right individuals. Law enforcement still says they're doing something I hope they are. I hope, you know, maybe they will, maybe they won't. Authorities describe a grisly scene with SUVs riddled with bullet holes and cars on fire. Eight children were found after the ambush and five had gunshot wounds or other injuries according to the Associated Press. The attack happened about 70 miles south of the border. Douglas Police say they responded with the fire department as security to the port of entry and fire transported the five children to helipads and they eventually were all transported to a hospital in Tucson. These patients that arrived there had gunshot wounds to them and there was five, five children ages between either eight or ten months to 14 years of age. The city of the United States, babies, children and adolescents who survived after the death of their mother. In total, six children were murdered and eight who escaped a life. Five survived, waiting for me while they were pregnant and today they are in a hospital in Arizona. Cauri just arrived eight years ago. He received a shot in the box and another in the leg. Alexander of four years they gave him a sword. Kylie of 14 years is the biggest and her face says more than 1000 words. He received a shot in the leg. Brixton, eight months, if he was alive after receiving a shot in the chest while another ball hit his mouth. He was in the vehicle that took the largest group, it was nine brothers. The seven that escaped a life were hidden by the children of 13 years who said to have been in the vehicle. The drama of this and what happened to these children and watching their mother being executed and other family members being burned in vehicles. The psychological damage to these children will be forever. Yeah, well, horrific, horrific. Six brothers were waiting for him. The mayor decided to send 15 and nine years to seek help. He lost today and was found later by family members. Not just got caught and gunfire in the wrong place at the wrong time. This was this was a home and level of cartel violence. The five children were taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then by the helicopter military to the border where another aircraft took them to a hospital in Tucson with their father. Today the men will have to recover from their wounds caused by the bullets and the trauma of seeing the murder of his mother and two of his brothers. In Tucson, Arizona, Guadalupe Venegas, noticias del. It started the war on drugs. The violence just escalated. Most of the problems that we have around here, the drug related, you know, and there's been some kidnapping and some killings from drug related things, you know. I have never been any Romney's kidnapped. Yeah, my brother was kidnapped three years ago in May. I think they kept him for two days, took him to the cave up in the mountains. They paid a small ransom over the road. They were mainly punk, they weren't really professionals. Right. And most of the weapons that are here in Mexico are legal weapons and most of those illegal weapons are coming from the states. Yes. Bastard furious, I'm sure you heard of that. Now the fast and the furious scandal he's talking about refers to a case with the American government, gave thousands of guns to the cartels in order to track them. Then they proceeded to lose track of them until they surfaced again in the murder cases of American agents. What, I think they were going to be able to keep control of them or keep track of them? Nonsense. Yeah, I don't know what in the world they were thinking and sending all those weapons to Mexico. And the fast and the furious scandal is just one of many that have seriously embarrassed the American government. Gosh. This is for the record. Need an four of my grandchildren or bark? You shot up. Right on the road out of La Mora. you
