When it is morning, a deputy in California admits that he lied when he said a sniper shot him. I think it's a good thing to have a shot from the north of the lighthouse in the past. I think it's from the point that we're going to go up the window. Good evening. I'm Serene Branson. We want to update you on the stories we're working on. This is CBSLA.com's The Run Down. There was no sniper. An investigation has found that an LA County sheriff's deputy who claimed he was shot in a station parking lot in landcaster, who claimed he was shot in a station parking lot in landcaster, who claimed he was shot in a station parking lot in landcaster was lying. 21-year-old deputy Angel Renosa had claimed a bullet grazed his shoulder Wednesday. Authorities say Renosa actually cut two holes in his shirt but had no injuries. Renosa has been relieved of his duty. This morning the search continues for the gunmen who shot an LA County sheriff's deputy in landcaster. According to the sheriff's department, 21-year-old deputy Angel Renoso was walking to his car in the employee parking lot when he was shot from a four-story building that overlooks the landcaster station. From massive manhunt to a major hoax, a rookie LA County sheriff's deputy who claimed that a sniper shot him admits he made it up. Yes, there were gunmen open fire on LA County deputies in the sheriff's station parking lot. In the sheriff's station parking lot. In the sheriff's station parking lot. I'm not going to go into the wound but I'll say it was minor. He's been treated and released and he's resting with his family. But the specifics of the wound, I don't want to go into. I don't have the specific information on that but like I said, the wound itself was minor. It's minor standing that no surgery thing like that was needed but the specifics like that I don't have. We don't know that. We're still looking at that at this time. That's something that they'll look for evidence to look into but as of right now I don't have an exact number for you. Approximately 248 PM this afternoon. One of our deputies, Deputy Angel Rinoza, was out in the parking lot of the station and put out emergency traffic that he was taking gunfire and in fact been struck. Deputies in station immediately responded out to where he was at. Located him. A evacuated him. Out of located him. A located him. A evacuated him out of the parking lot and got him medical treatment. He is. In station immediately responded out to where he was at. Located him. A evacuated him. Out of the parking lot and got him medical treatment. He is doing great. Thankfully the wound was minor and he's been treated and he's doing well in high spirits. The snap was with him and we expect that he'll be fine for recovery. Just thankfully the issue or the wound were very minor, very, very lucky. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy is in big trouble tonight. The deputy claimed this week that he was shot by a sniper setting off a massive manhunt for the shooter. Well now police say it was all a hoax. Blaine, Alexander has that. The deputy angel, Raynosa was frantic. The call he was under fire. A sniper he said taking aim from this apartment building. Take a shot. The light has a helicopter. Officer's descended in full swat gear locking down this apartment building and a nearby school for hours. Deputy Raynosa was rushed to the hospital. He fortunately was wearing a vest. The vest saved his life but the bullet did deflect into a shoulder. The only thing there was no wound. There was no shooter. Turns out the deputy made the whole thing up. The reported sniper assault was fabricated by our deputy. In an unprecedented late-night news conference, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Raynosa eventually confessed the two bullet holes in his uniform. He had caused the holes in his uniform shirt by cutting it with a knife. There was no sniper. No shots fired. Completely fabricated. The department's disgust captured in this Facebook post embarrassed, furious, unbelievable. Tonight, the 21-year-old rookie still in training is out of a job and under investigation as his former colleagues want to know why he launched the lie that brought a city street to a standstill. And Blaine, I was just going to ask that. That's what everyone wants to know. Do they have any idea why he would do this? No, okay. He did not give a reason when he was pressed by officers. But multiple law enforcement sources tell us that Raynosa recently received a number of unfavorable performance reviews while he was in training. Tonight, his case is going on to the DA's office and he could face criminal charges. Okay. Blaine Alexander, thank you. Here today, a sniper shot one of our deputies as he was leaving the station. The bullet came from a four-story apartment that Cater's 2 designed for and allows mental ill people to live there. That's all that lives there is mental ill people. During the subsequent interview, Angel Raynosa admitted that he was not shot at. From the apartment complex area as he previously claimed. He also told investigators that he had caused the holes in his uniform shirt by cutting it with a knife. There was no sniper, no shots fired, and no gunshot injury sustained to his shoulder. Completely fabricated. It's at 4 with breaking news and landcaster and LA County Sheriff's Deputy is shot. K-Cowline, Stu Mandel, live overhead in Sky 9, Stu. What can you tell us? Well, I can tell you that this all happened out here actually at the landcaster's sheriff station in the parking lot. Now we understand that it happened in this area right here. One deputy was shot and there were several deputies shot at. There were several deputies shot at. There were several deputies shot at. One deputy actually struck by a bullet. We understand possibly in the shoulder taken to a local hospital and is in good condition. I don't know how good of a condition you can be after being shot, but apparently that's the information we're hearing. He's in the hospital but is expected to be okay. The sniper also fired at other deputies, but other deputies, but no one else was hit. At this time we are incredibly disappointed to have to report to you that the reported sniper assault was fabricated by our deputy. The train he claimed he was shot at a sheriff station comes clean and admits he made up the whole thing. Well, it's unleashing a wave of backlash for landcaster leaders in particular, the mayor, who slammed the mentally ill community in defense of that deputy. Building filled with people who are being treated for mental illness. Of course it's a concern. Of course it's insanity to allow such a facility to exist in that particular location. He can't say it because the sheriff's department has to be really politically correct about all this stuff, but let's be realistic. It's outrageous to have that population in that location and thank God we're not talking about a funeral as a result of it. I mean, why do we have to act like the mentally ill or not mentally ill? They are, right? We have to take precautions. I mean, I'm compassionate as anybody else, but I'm also the mayor of a city and the safety of the 160,000 people who live here is ultimately my responsibility. That compassion begins to wane when I see the detrimental impact it has on the people who live here. We do move on to a surprising twist in the search for a possible sniper in Los Angeles County. The sheriff revealing it was all a hoax. A deputy claiming he was shot in the shoulder in a station parking lot and saved by his bulletproof vest. He's now accused of making it all up. What he was doing was getting ready to take that vest off. Had he done so, this would be a much more tragic situation. Swat team members moved into the nearby apartment complex and searched it in nearby streets for hours. Two people were detained, but later two people were detained, but later released. Now we're told that that deputy that rookie was just about to take that vest off when he was shot. We're told that ballistic vest likely saved his life. He is now. We're told resting with his family, Robin. Full recovery. So thankful that he had that vest on. So thankful that he had that vest on. So thankful that he had that vest on, Matt. Thank you. We're asking though if the bulletproof vest may have provided some protection for him. I just spoke with the sheriff's deputy, a spokesperson for the department. They were saying they don't know if at this point, if that's actually the case because those protective areas may not have been where that bullet hit the deputy. So they're trying to figure that out right now. It was with us on the phone right now. Mayor, first of all, thank you so much for joining us and taking some time out to talk to us. I understand that you actually spent some time with a deputy who was shot in the emergency room. What can you tell us about what you witnessed at the time with a deputy who was shot in the emergency room? What can you tell us about what you witnessed and how he's doing? Well, he was in a lot of pain. He's doing. Well, he was in a lot of pain. Well, he was in a lot of pain. Well, he was in a lot of pain, but he's going to be okay. You know, we expect him to return to do it at some point. Well, thank heavens for that. Mayor, what can you tell us about this particular building? Is there some sort of alert system that you send out to your residents or how do they know the shelter in place? Yeah, is that what they're doing right now? Well, right now, they've cleared the area. We've got a virtual army here at St. John's and they think he's still on the building. Let's get to Veronica Miracle. I understand that she has arrived on the scene now and she's gathering as much information as she can get, even though this is a very fluid situation. So Veronica, what do you have for us? Yeah, David, I'm here with Mayor R. Rex Parris. You just came from the hospital where you had a chance to speak with the deputy. Please let our viewers know what's going on right now at the hospital. Well, he's in a lot of pain, but he's going to be okay. He took a bullet right about here, but he had his vest on and so it reflected, you know, deflected up and the inner to shoulder that we expect him maybe one night. Wow, that's pretty remarkable. Did he was he able to tell you what exactly happened? We understand there's an all-out manhunt right now to find his shooter. He was telling other deputies what what happened. I was know that his biggest concern. He was in a great deal of pain at the time. Definitely. What can you tell us about the investigation that's going on right now and to the people of this community, what they're seeing and hearing? Well, we've got hundreds of deputies here. It seems like the sheriff just arrived. We've got the SUV team, which is the swap team. They're surrounding the building. They think he's still in the building, but you know, they're looking all over and making certain. Hopefully, I don't want to say what I hope. I don't want to say what I hope. I don't want to say what I hope. Okay. Definitely a troubling time. Can you tell us what else can you tell us about the deputies? Is a trainee is he a younger man? Well, to me, it looks like a kid. I mean, it's it's it's distressing to see somebody that age on that gurney knowing he had just been shot. And quite frankly, it mentioned she it happened because of incompetence and government allowing that facility to be there in the first place. And quite frankly, it mentioned she it happened because of incompetence and government allowing that facility to be there in the first place. Have there been an injury here? Was it non penetrating their words description and minor injury to the deputy? And they also say a pellet rifle has been recovered and has been sent in for testing. McGuire says he knows what gunshots sound like and that he knows what it's like to be a police officer. We did a film about it and I was a one being snipe. That's him in a fake uniform shooting a fake gun. McGuire says the guns he uses on film belong to him. They're BB guns. Yesterday, he told deputies the fake guns were inside his apartment. And McGuire says deputies took his BB guns and they haven't given them back. I need my guns because that's we get hired out. I got the uniform and the badges and the gun. We get hired out as a cop. I got my cop car. You know, and I need my guns. Scary situation and we understand that that sheriff deputy was shot in the shoulder. Apparently he's going to be okay. Any other. I have one point to detect that. It starts to suspect that story when we fabricated. I can't say exactly when there were several things that were curious. So the evidence that was recovered or the lack of evidence. There was no ballistic evidence in the parking lot at all. There were no bullets recovered from the point of impact. There were no cars struck by gunfire. Some witness statements. There were many people that were in the vicinity, both in the parking lot and in the apartment complex who didn't hear any shots. So you're that close to the sheriff's? Yes. No gunshots. Nothing. Elaine Davis was in an apartment right across the hall from Jaime Flores. He heard nothing. No gunshots. Ken McGuire lives next door to Jaime Flores. His apartment has a vantage point just like Jaime's. Do you think if shots have been fired from your side of the apartment building? We would have heard it. I think. And did you hear anything? Didn't hear anything. There were many things that didn't add up. However, every case is unique. And sometimes you're not going to have witnesses that hear every gunshot and things like that. Sometimes bullets get lost in a crime scene. However, things didn't add up. We were still investigating. We have to substantiate and we have to build a foundation for the facts that we established rather than just going with a gut feeling. There are security cameras here everywhere. We have not yet heard back from investigators. We don't know exactly what they captured, but hopefully they recorded something that can help in this investigation. It's almost a little bit odd that we haven't heard anything yet regarding witnesses. The only witness account that we have is the actual deputy himself, the one who was injured, that radio call. That's really the extent of eye witness account that we have. One has to wonder whether there was anybody inside the apartment complex that they've been able to communicate with that herd or saw something that can help, that can help the search. We haven't heard that yet whether they've been able to access any witnesses who are providing information. Certainly, as you mentioned, they really can't let anybody out. They're going to have to form a containment area within the containment space and identify everybody very carefully because they just don't know what the shooter looks like or what they're dealing with, per se. But certainly, there is a starvation for intelligence gathering, but certainly, there is a starvation for intelligence gathering so that they can find this person sooner rather than later. That's going to come from anybody who heard or saw anything. Maybe somebody running down the hallway, maybe somebody who was acting odd in the moment's prior to the shooting, that type of thing. That's all information that they're going to be trying to gather relatively expeditiously. We just haven't heard any traffic to that fact. We have not heard them gaining any of that intelligence just yet. Yeah, for sure, we're gathering it. You're right. Witnesses in the building, I'm sure, heard the shots. They could at least help guide the sheriff's officials, sure, heard the shot in the building. And you're right, witnesses in the building, witnesses in the building, I'm sure, heard the shots. They could at least help guide the sheriff's officials to where the noise came from. Exactly, because someone had to hear it really loud, maybe right next door or something. If you're living next door to somebody who just fired off two rounds in a high powered rifle, you're going to generally know it was within a few feet of you. Did he fall down? Was he like, when kind of extra apparent? Was there a lot of acting with it? You know, I can't answer that. I wasn't there at that time, and I haven't asked that specific question. What did it? Buts and butts and put me at that. What happened when he went to the hospital? He was treated for a, what they termed a grazing gunshot wound, because that's what he reported, and that's what the evidence on his closing indicated at the time. Come on, don't bullshit me. My understanding is that on the night of the incident, it may have been red, but there was no visible contusion. And treated the wound did not penetrate his skin, so it was a contusion. It was a bruise. If I saw any bruise in the hospital, my understanding is that on the night of the incident, it may have been red, but there was no visible. And treated the wound did not penetrate his skin, so it was a contusion. It was a bruise. Contusion, it was a bruise. Hi, this perimeter is so big, so many streets have been closed off. The Lancaster Sheriff's Station shut down. In fact, they've moved the whole operation of block or two to the south, so that all the additional people they're bringing in to help with the search aren't exposed or aren't in a potential line of fire, aren't exposed or aren't in a potential line of fire from those buildings where this came from. Sheriff's, are you looking at this more units showing up as well? Yep. More units rolling into the neighborhood of Command Post being set up. I'm not exactly sure of the cross street where that could be. So that's going to be golden, I'm sorry, Gatsden Street and Kildare Street. So that's where they are setting up shop for the evening, and you can see lots of law enforcement already on the scene down there. A Command Post now being staged. A triage area has also been set up in case that is necessary. If there are additional gunshot wound victims or injured, they will be taken to the triage area which is nearby and a number of ambulances you'll notice have also been moved into place from other parts of Lancaster and even Palmdale moving into position here. Quite an undertaking and it's keep in mind it's 105 degrees there in Lancaster. Very hot day and a lot of folks who are being evacuated from their buildings, they're going to have to stand in that hot sun. And one unusual thing that is being done this afternoon is they are going to put one of the sheriff's special enforcement bureau snipers on board a helicopter. That's in case they have to go after somebody who might be barricaded in the upper floor of a building. It gives them a tactical advantage to be able to use the helicopter in that way. So ladies and then half hour what has transpired? Yeah, we'll go ahead and recap what we know so far. It was a very frantic situation here along Sierra Highway. Sierra and Lancaster is where the Ellicante Sheriff's Nation is located. The gunfire appears to have come from that apartment building that you shape building right there in the center of your screen. Apparently a shooter on one of the elevated floors, maybe the third or possibly the fourth floor was shooting out of a side south spacing window towards that parking lot there and hit a sheriff's deputy. At least one sheriff's deputy was able to walk away with the gunshot when walking self into the fire station, which is only a block away. There was pandemonium in that parking lot. People were hiding out. Some may still be in their cars as we speak. There were also people fleeing the sheriff's station itself, civilian employees inside the sheriff's station fleeing the crime lab, which is near the rear of the building as well. And now this entire neighborhood is surrounded by Ellicante Sheriff's deputies, SCB teams, special enforcement bureau, which is the SWAT team in the county's jurisdiction. They are making their way up here. There's an entire team that's about to be airlifted and dropped off about five minutes out. It's going to be dropped off without a block away in a nearby school where they will unload, suit up, and then enter that apartment building where there is a frantic search about to go on down the hallways and apartment by apartment in that apartment complex. I believe it's called the Arper Field Luxury Apartment Complex, not to be confused with the mental health facility, which is adjacent. So that rectangular building there is a mental health facility. It's right next to the sheriff's station and immediately next door to the apartment complex in question here. So it does sound like they've been able to clear those south-facing windows that you're looking at on this side of the building. That'll allow them to clear the parking lot and any individuals who may be hiding out in their car, but they still have a large building for this shooter to hide. We don't know what that suspect looks like, whether he is going to try and blend in with the rest of the people who live inside this building. We'll just have to wait and see as law enforcement enters that building, but they have their work cut out. Sheriff's office as well, a forensics lab, after the first deputy was shot and injured this afternoon, they had to take some measures to evacuate a number of other deputies who they said were pinned down by the gunfire, but were pinned down, said were pinned down by the gunfire, both in the parking lot and in that other building that's on the north end of the parking lot completely separated away from the landcasters sheriff's station. We understand that this might have been the area that the shooting or the shots were being fired at. We have one deputy's vehicle doors open and then just over to a couple of rows, there's actual paper screwed around, thrown around, thrown around. So we know that there were other people in that parking lot when those shots were fired, actual paper screwed around, thrown around. So we know that there were other people in that parking lot when those shots were fired. New details tonight after a sheriff's deputy in landcasters lied about getting shot, trust has been broken and many people in that community are outraged that someone sworn to protect them could really make up such a disturbing story. NBC Force Kim Tobin is live tonight at the Hall of Justice in downtown LA with more on that Kim. And Jonathan, good evening to you tonight. The Mayor of Lancaster says that he's just as shocked as everybody else to find out that this was all made up. He visited the deputy in the hospital. He says that deputy was acting like he was in distress and that he was in a lot of pain. Meantime, people who live at the apartment complex right next to the sheriff's station where this had allegedly happened or was set to have happened said they're angry about the comments. The mayor made about them and ultimately about how the situation was handled. The intense radio calls as 21 year old deputy trainee, Angel Renosa said he was shot in the shoulder claiming bullets came from an apartment complex nearby. It's almost self destructive and how he did it. Lancaster Mayor R. X. Paris said there's still no answer why Renosa made up the story. But it's just so sick what he did. You know, you have to think that perhaps some made up the story. But it's just so sick what he did. But it's just so sick what he did. You know, you have to think that perhaps he needs to move into that apartment. The complex that offers mental health services to some of his residents has been a point of contention for the mayor and he doubled down on why he believes it shouldn't be there. I don't think that it's a good idea to have a facility that houses a lot of menliol people with windows that open onto a sheriff's parking lot. People who live at the complex outraged at the way Paris portrayed them. Have the mayor then we all with mentally ill drug addict section eight people. That's not true. Isn't this your community? This you the mayor for 12 years and you just throw us on the bus. Some of the residents telling us they were treated like criminals as their apartments were turned upside down. He's sincerely regret that people's homes were invaded unnecessarily. I wish that hadn't happened. But that does have to happen when there's a report of a sniper. Paris says the all out manhand cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but they believe they responded appropriately and they're grateful their community wasn't targeted by a gun men. Renoza has been relieved from his position right now. The case is being investigated. It'll go to the district attorney's office where he could possibly face criminal charges relive in downtown LA Kim Tobin NBC 4 news. Thank you Kim almost self destructive and how he did it. The mayor are ex Paris said there's still no answer why Renoza made up the story. But it's just so sick what he did. You know you have to think that perhaps he needs to move into that apartment. The complex that offers mental health services to some of his residents has been a point of contention for the mayor and he doubled down on why he believes it shouldn't be there. I don't think that it's a good idea to have a facility that houses a lot of mentally ill people with windows that open onto a share of parking lots.
