1850s
November 2, 1853 – Louisville, Kentucky
Shooter: Matthew Ward (student)
Fatalities: 1 (Schoolmaster William H.G. Butler)
Details: Ward shot Butler in retaliation for punishing his brother. He was acquitted, sparking public outrage.

August 16, 1856 – Florence, Alabama
Shooter: Father of a student
Fatalities: 1 (Schoolmaster)
Details: After the schoolmaster strangled a student for killing his pet sparrow, the boy's father shot the teacher dead.

July 6, 1858 – Baltimore, Maryland
Shooter: Unknown
Fatalities: 1 (15-year-old son of Col. John T. Farlow)
Details: The boy was shot during a Sabbath School gathering; the perpetrator escaped.

1860s
January 21, 1860 – Todd County, Kentucky
